Panhandle Wind

Panhandle Wind is one of the first wind facilities to use the Competitive Renewable Energy Zone (CREZ) transmission lines that transport electricity from the world-class wind resource in the Texas Panhandle to where the state needs it.

  • The 400 MW Panhandle Wind facility includes two phases that began operations in 2014. Panhandle Wind 1 has 118 General Electric 1.85 MW wind turbines, and Panhandle Wind 2 entails 79 Siemens Gamesa 2.3 MW turbines.   

  • Over the first 25 years of operations, Panhandle Wind expects to inject about $200 million into the local region, including payments to Carson County, the Panhandle and White Deer Independent School Districts, the Panhandle Groundwater Conservation District, participating landowners, and the Panhandle Wind Community Benefits Program. 

The Panhandle Wind Community Benefits Program was established at the Amarillo Area Foundation (AAF) to promote educational and civic causes in Carson County. The AAF administers an annual grant process for the Panhandle Wind Education Fund and Civic Fund, with guidance from an advisory committee of Carson County residents. 

The Civic Fund supports new and existing programs that improve the quality of life for county residents. Grants contribute to initiatives promoting civic engagement, economic and workforce development, health and wellness, disaster recovery, and emergency preparedness. 

The Education Fund supports K–12 educational opportunities for Carson County public school students by providing grants directly to schools and organizations supporting schools. The Education Fund also awards four $2,500 higher education scholarships to graduating seniors from Panhandle and White Deer high schools each year.

Construction of the combined phases involved more than 400 workers installing 43 miles of access roads to 197 American-made wind turbines and enough underground electrical cable that, if laid out in a line, would reach from Panhandle to Fort Worth, Texas. In addition to local contractors and seasonal workers, approximately 20 team members operate and maintain the site.

Compared to average emissions and water consumption of Texas coal-fired generation, Panhandle Wind’s annual production conserves more than 1 billion gallons of water, enough water to meet the needs of 20,000 Texans, and avoids nearly 2 million metric tons of carbon dioxide emissions, which is equal to taking 350,000 cars off the roads each year.
