Armow Wind is located in the Municipality of Kincardine in Ontario, Canada. At its northern latitude, it is no surprise that the area experiences intense winters and high snows. These conditions are quickly turned to the local community’s advantage with a well-maintained network of snowmobile trails.
Pattern Canada, in partnership with Samsung Renewable Energy, is proud to be part of the Municipality of Kincardine. The Armow Wind Facility is an investment in the region that is creating many economic benefits, including jobs and substantial growth in the tax base. The wind facility commenced commercial operations in December 2015.
AMEC Black & McDonald managed project construction, which was completed in December of 2015. Approximately 350 workers were on-site during peak activity, with an average of 200 throughout construction. Local workers and subcontractors were involved to the greatest extent possible in all aspects of construction – from building access roads and turbine foundations to assembling and installing turbine components. A talented team of 15 full-time employees operates and maintains the facility, in addition to the use of local contractors.
The facility is expected to contribute an estimated $10 million dollars in payments over 20 years, benefiting Bruce County, the Municipality of Kincardine and local school boards.
Armow Wind committed $13.6 million to the Municipality of Kincardine as part of the Armow Wind Project Community Benefit Program, which included a $1 million contribution to the Kincardine Airport Improvement Project. True to our Canadian interests, we also sponsor local junior and minor hockey teams as well as many other causes.
In 2002, the Province committed to phasing out coal-fired generation, and the development of wind energy helped Ontario meet that goal in 2014. We’re proud to be part of that commitment.
Compared to coal-fired generation, Armow Wind annually offsets the CO2 equivalent of 116,900 cars, and conserves enough water to supply 16,700 people. The facility sits on agricultural land and is dotted with ponds and pastures for grazing sheep and cattle. Following project construction, we planted more than 200 native trees throughout the project area.
