South Kent Wind is located in the Municipality of Chatham-Kent in southwestern Ontario. In partnership with Samsung Renewable Energy, Inc., South Kent Wind reached commercial operation in 2014. The facility is one of the largest operating in Ontario and is expected to produce clean, renewable energy for approximately 100,000 Ontario homes each year.
This site is one of the most spread-out in Pattern Canada’s fleet, operating across more than 165 parcels of private land. From the top of the turbines, we can see Detroit on a clear day.
An average of 300 workers were on-site during project construction, with up to 500 in peak activity periods. Approximately 20 team members are on-site to operate and maintain the facility.
South Kent Wind contributes an estimated $800,000 to the tax base annually, benefiting the Municipality of Chatham-Kent and Lambton-Kent District Schools.
Additionally, $16 million of property taxes will support the Municipality and the Lambton-Kent District Schools.
We are committed to expanding benefits from the facility throughout the Chatham-Kent region. The South Kent Wind Community Fund was established to help build strong and vibrant communities in Chatham-Kent. The fund supports the community, environmental, health and wellness, youth and education, First Nation, and Métis initiatives through a grant process administered by the Chatham Kent Community Foundation.
The South Kent Wind Community Fund is administered by the Chatham Kent Community Foundation and will contribute approximately $250,000 to local charitable organizations each year in perpetuity.
Funds are distributed among five areas of giving through a grant process and support capital, operating and special one-time costs for facilities, programs and events.
A committee consisting of seven members from the Chatham-Kent community and the Chatham Kent Community Foundation evaluates grant applications bi-annually.
The South Kent Wind Community Fund grant program was suspended in 2020 and replaced with the COVID-19 Relief Fund. Below is the list of recipients.
South Kent Wind sits on 68,000 acres, although only 130 acres are affected during operations. The facility generates enough electricity to power 100,000 Ontario homes.
Each year the facility conserves enough water to meet the needs of 24,000 Ontarians and offsets the CO2 equivalent of removing 165,000 cars from the road.
