Grand Renewable Wind, located in Haldimand County, Ontario, is a joint venture between Pattern Canada, Samsung Renewable Energy, and Six Nations of the Grand River Development Corporation. Project construction began in September 2013 and the facility commenced commercial operations in December 2014.
Ontario workers have been involved in every aspect of Grand Renewable Wind – from manufacture and assembly of the wind turbine components to site construction, component installation, and facility operations.
Grand Renewable Wind pays approximately $4 million a year directly into the local economy and increases the tax base by an estimated $400,000 annually, benefiting Haldimand County and local schools.
Approximately 500 workers were on-site during peak construction activity, with 98% of the workforce from Ontario. Twelve full-time employees currently operate and maintain the facility. Grand Renewable Wind uses 67 Siemens 2.3 MW wind turbine towers made in Windsor CS Wind using Ontario steel and blades manufactured in Tillsonburg.
Our facility sits on numerous private land parcels. We have worked hard to get to know all the landowners and to act as good neighbours. Over 20 years, we will pay an estimated $23 million in property taxes and contributions to a Community Vibrancy Fund.
The Community Vibrancy Fund is administered by Haldimand County and supports land stewardship development and construction of recreational facilities, infrastructure, and community service. Specific fund recipients include local libraries, parks, and community halls. One of our key partners is Six Nations of the Grand River Development Corporation, which has a mission to achieve economic self-sufficiency without compromising the values of the Six Nations people.
Grand Renewable Wind generates enough clean energy to power 50,000 Ontario homes. Compared to coal-fired generation, our production avoids CO2 emissions equal to removing 83,000 cars from the road and conserves enough water to meet the needs of 12,000 Ontarians each year.
We also support the local wildlife refuge and work with them for the wellbeing of all wildlife around our facility.

Pattern Canada is dedicated to the production of clean, renewable energy – by Canadians and for Canadians.
As the country’s largest operator of wind power with more than 1,800 MW of installed capacity, our team has brought nine wind facilities to operation across four provinces, including the largest First Nation wind project in the country.
We are proud of our coast-to-coast Canadian roots and the results of our work in the country over the past decade. We look forward to providing lasting benefits to the communities, families, and workers involved in all of our existing and future renewable energy facilities.
Bkejwanong First Nation (Walpole Island) is located near Wallaceburg, Ontario at the mouth of the St. Clair River. It encompasses six islands that have been occupied by the Ojibwe, Potawatomi and Odawa peoples for thousands of years. Walpole Island has never been set apart as a reserve, giving it the distinction of being unceded territory. The First Nation is committed to a sustainable future within its Traditional Territory, which includes being heavily involved in the renewable energy sector over the past decade. This has culminated in equity participation in four wind energy projects totalling 350 MW.
Samsung Renewable Energy (Samsung) is creating clean, renewable energy for generations to come. Together with its partners, Samsung is making a $5-billion investment in Ontario. Our investment has created 900 direct renewable energy manufacturing jobs and 9,000 high-skilled jobs in the Province. Built on Samsung C&T’s commercial and technical expertise, and the success of its renewable energy projects in other countries, Samsung is creating real jobs, through real investment, benefiting real people.
